Interesting facts about Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Benaras, is one of the oldest cities in the world, located in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a holy city in Hinduism and Jainism, and the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism. With ancient temples, ghats, and a laid-back vibe, Varanasi has a rich history and interesting sights, ranging from landmarks to monuments to the vibrant culture. Here are some interesting facts about Varanasi, India.

First, Varanasi is known as the oldest living city in the world. It is believed to have been in existence since the 11th century BCE. The city’s name is derived from the terms “Varanasi”, which means “City of Light”. It is seen as a symbol of spiritualism, with many temples and sacred sites located throughout. It was once the capital of the kingdom of Kashi, and the earliest reference to the city dates back to the 6th century BCE.

Second, the streets of Varanasi have vibrant cultures, which can be seen in the different religious groups, festivals, and local customs that exist in the area. It is a spiritual and bustling city, with many festivals and events taking place throughout the year. The exuberant 19-day celebration of Ganga Aarti (a puja dedicated to the river Ganges) includes prayers, offerings of flowers, and the burning of incense. Varanasi is also an important center for Hindu culture, as it attracts hundreds of Hindu pilgrims each year for a dip in the famous Ganges river.

Third, Varanasi is home to about 88 ghats. These are steps that lead down to the water, and many of them are used for rituals and bathing. Some of the most prominent ghats are Assi Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, and Manikarnika Ghat, which is the holiest spot in Varanasi. It is said that anyone who dies in the area will be blessed with moksha (release from the cycle of birth and death). Many of the ghats offer stunning views of the river and its ancient temples, as well as a number of small boats and ferries that ferry across the city.

This temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (Symbols of Shiva). It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Hinduism, as well as a major tourist attraction in the city. Another popular temple is the Durga Kund Temple, which is dedicated to Durga, the goddess of power and strength.
